The Black Yak Poetry Contest

The story of the Black Yak Poetry Contest is the story of twentieth century America, which is precisely when and where it has taken place. Beginning in 1901 as a way to promote milk, the contest has grown to catholic proportions, even to the extent of publishing decidedly lactose intolerant poetess Shelley Muir in 1989. Through two world wars, several depressions, one and a half impeachments, and that little girl in the well, the Black Yak Company has published a winning chapbook every single year of that century, and even though every single book is currently out of print, the Black Yak has no intention of quitting now! The winner of the Black Yak 2000 contest was Donald Zirilli, as he was the only entrant. The winner of the 2001 contest was Colleen Russell, pending a contractual dispute. Their books are currently unavailable, as are all the 21st century winners, though they may get their own list some day.
